October 6, 2000 Merida Industry Co., Ltd., a leading Taiwan bicycle manufacturer, reported an increase in bicycle sales for the first eight months of this year. Sales from the company’s factories in Taiwan totaled 356,677 bicycles for the January to August period, up more than 24 percent from the 286,172 bicycles sold during the same period last year. Sales for August this year amounted to 38,856 bicycles, up more than 9 percent from last year, according to a spokesperson for the company. Additionally, Merida’s eight-month revenue jumped 34.77 percent from the same period in 1999. Sources indicate that part of the reason for the large increase has been a general rise in the average sales prices of bicycles this year.
